LSH and FAA Requirements to fly RC Aircraft

Club Membership Requirements

To fly at our field and maintain active membership in the club, all pilots must meet current FAA and AMA requirements for recreational model aircraft operation. This includes:

  • Maintaining active membership in the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA)
  • Complying with FAA Remote ID regulations or flying at an approved FRIA site
  • Although not required we recommend Successfully completing the FAA TRUST Test

These measures help ensure safe, legal, and responsible flying for all club members.

About the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA)

The Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) is the official national organization for model aviation in the United States. Founded in 1936, the AMA represents thousands of hobbyists, competitive pilots, and RC enthusiasts who share a passion for model aircraft of all kinds.

Recognized by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as a Community-Based Organization (CBO), AMA plays a vital role in promoting safety, supporting education, and protecting access to flying sites nationwide.

Benefits of AMA Membership

  • Liability Insurance Coverage – Up to $2.5 million in protection for members while flying, including coverage for landowners.
  • Access to FRIA Flying Fields – AMA membership is required to fly at most club fields designated as FAA-approved FRIA sites.
  • National Advocacy – AMA defends hobbyist rights and works with the FAA to preserve airspace access for recreational flyers.
  • Educational Resources – Receive the monthly Model Aviation magazine, access to online learning, and youth outreach programs.
  • Events & Community – Connect with over 2,400 AMA clubs and participate in flying events, competitions, and club activities.
  • Exclusive Perks – Enjoy member-only discounts, scholarships, and special offers from industry partners.

About FAA Remote ID for Recreational Flyers

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has introduced Remote Identification (Remote ID) as a digital license plate system for unmanned aircraft. Remote ID allows authorities to identify and track drones and model aircraft while they are in flight, improving safety and accountability in the national airspace.

As of September 16, 2023, most recreational flyers are required to comply with Remote ID regulations. However, there are important exceptions — including the ability to fly at designated FRIA (FAA-Recognized Identification Area) fields without Remote ID equipment.

Key Points About Remote ID

  • Required for Most Recreational Flyers – Remote ID compliance is mandatory for most pilots flying model aircraft outdoors in uncontrolled airspace.
  • FRIA Sites Are Exempt – If you're flying at an FAA-approved FRIA site (such as an AMA-chartered club field), Remote ID is not required.
  • Two Ways to Comply – Use a drone or model aircraft with built-in Remote ID, or attach an FAA-approved Remote ID broadcast module.
  • Registration Required – Aircraft must be registered with the FAA, and Remote ID broadcast information must be linked to the registration number.
  • Enforcement Grace Period – The FAA began enforcing Remote ID rules in March 2024, but education and outreach remain a priority.

About the FAA TRUST Test

The TRUST (The Recreational UAS Safety Test) is a free online safety course required by the FAA for all recreational drone and model aircraft pilots in the United States. It is designed to ensure that hobbyists understand basic airspace rules, safety guidelines, and responsible flying practices.

The AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) is an official FAA-Approved Test Administrator for TRUST, offering the course and test at no cost to all recreational flyers — including RC pilots.

Who Needs to Take the TRUST Test?

  • All Recreational Flyers – Anyone flying a model aircraft or drone for fun must take and pass the TRUST test once.
  • One-Time Requirement – You only need to take TRUST once, and there is no expiration.
  • Immediate Certificate – Upon passing, you receive a printable certificate that must be carried when flying.
  • No Penalty for Mistakes – The course is educational, with answers provided if you choose incorrectly — it's designed to teach, not fail you.
  • Available Through the AMA – TRUST is available on the AMA website and takes about 15–30 minutes to complete.
